Exclusive to Coolmic - Interview about Dream Diver by Davi Nathanael

Davi Nathanael is here to share a thrilling and adventurous, but very beautiful “DREAM” with the Coolmic readers!!

The main editor of Davi Nathanael will be asking questions about the artist and their new comic! Thank you for working with Coolmic!

Firstly, what made you want to become a comic artist?

Dream Diver - Cut no.1

When I was a child, I was interested in many professions such as movie director, fashion designer, professional artist, and more. Around 13 years old, I realized that if I became a comic artist, I could do all of them at the same time!

Creating the plots, the scenes, the angles of each frames like a movie director, designing the characters clothes for each chapter like a stylist, thinking about how characters will move and talk in scenes like an actor… I was able to do all of those things while making my comic.

Was there any comic that pulled you into this world?

The biggest impact I got was from the anime “Sailor moon”.

After going through many older, Europe based animations, Sailor moon was something that gave me a great shock. It had the action, slice of life, fantasy, love… everything really, and also it was the first Japanese animation I ever saw. It exposed me to a lot of Japanese culture!

Comic-wise, I loved CLAMPs titles which was something that gave me the idea of becoming a comic artist. Also, I enjoyed the way Japanese content showed the antagonists’ side, which was a big shock for me, because before then I never even thought about “why” and “how” those people became like that.

You may have had many ask you in the past, but how did you get so good at drawing?

Practice!

I think that practicing step by step is the most important thing that will improve your drawing.

When I was in Germany, everyone looked up to me and praised me on my drawing, but when I was in Japan, I found out that there were many skilled artists and my level was nowhere near theirs. That really motivated me and made me feel like I wanted to get better at drawing in order to catch up with them.

So, after that, I just kept on drawing and drawing, and never got satisfied with my skills, and always looked for some areas that needed improvement.

A lot of the other overseas artists were saying the same, too!

Do you have any tips for the Coolmic users who want to improve their drawing?

Dream Diver - Rough cut

I do hold a drawing class occasionally, and I always tell my students to watch out for the whole balance of what you are drawing. For example, I see many people drawing the characters head and face first. Which is not a bad thing, but after the face gets completed in detail and then the body gets started, the balance between the head and the body just does not click well.

This goes the same for every drawing, so yes, I really think the balance is the most important thing when creating your work.

My next question is do you have any targets for the future?

I think many comic artists have the same dream, but it would be lovely to see my comic get animated. I would be a really happy person if I got to see my characters move and speak, and if I could hear the background music while they go on their adventures!

I guess to make that dream come true, I will need to aim for a long series as a comic first, but one of my big goals is getting animated!

Dream Diver - Cut no.2

Now, some questions about the comic…

How did you come up with the ideas for Dream Diver?

Originally, it was an idea that I had when I still was a student, but I didn’t have the skills to make the idea come to shape at the time. But when I was going through the ideas which I jotted down back then, I found rough pages that I drew out, maybe about 10 years ago, which was about people going into the game world and experiencing a massive adventure. Which is something we see a lot these days, so I gave it a small twist and created a story based on a “dream”.

Dream Diver - Cut no.3

Yes, I do see a lot of stories now-a-days where the main characters jumps into a game, but it’s amazing that you had the idea around 10 years ago!

How about the characters? How did you come up with them?

Dream Diver - Cut no.4

Well, there was a character that I had for the idea of this same story, but unfortunately, she doesn’t appear in this episode of Dream Diver. While thinking through the story and the characters, Lucian (the main character of Dream Diver) popped up, and after focusing on him, all the characters around him were created in my mind. I usually think about what kind of character Lucian is, and what kind of people would be around him, and that is how all the other characters gathered around him in the comic.

I see, so thinking about the character’s personality is how you created the characters around Lucian! I guess if his personality was quite different, all the other characters may have been different too…!

Now that we have heard about how you came up with the story/character idea, what would you like the readers to keep an eye out for whilst reading this comic?

He Really Hates Me - Cut no.5

Please enjoy! Lol.

It’s my first comic on Coolmic, so that would be the first thing that I would like people to feel when reading Dream Diver. There will be more themes that I would like to show in the future, but at this moment, if everyone could go through my drawing and story, and have a fun time, it would be great.

Yes! Enjoying is something really important when reading a comic!

I would love to see the themes that are in your mind sometime in the future, too!

Finally, could you give the final comment to the readers?

Please keep on reading and enjoying comics! And if possible, please keep on supporting the artists! It really is great motivation when comic artists get support from the fans...which should lead to more splendid comics being created. I really think the bond between the fans and the artists is important to keeping this comic industry driving forward.

And I hope that I can become one of the artists that people will support!
